Big energy news for the East Midlands

The announcement of a Small Modular Reactor (SMR) at Cottam marks another significant milestone in the UK’s journey toward clean, sustainable energy. It promises to bring high-quality engineering and construction jobs to the region, reinforcing the East Midlands’ role in the energy transition.

Ben Bradley, Head of Communications and Engagement for STEP Fusion said:

“Together, the three sites – West Burton, Cottam, and High Marnham – form a powerful East Midlands Supercluster, combining diverse technologies and creating a hub for investment, innovation, and opportunity across the region.

“STEP Fusion at West Burton is leading the way globally, with bold plans to build the world’s first prototype fusion power plant. Designed to be safe, low-carbon, and sustainable, it will play a vital role in the future energy mix.

“On site, we continue to prepare for this future by exploring development options and conducting detailed site characterisation. We look forward to sharing more soon during our early consultation for planning consent for the STEP Fusion project, another landmark in our transformation from fossil fuel to fusion”.
