New UK Fusion Energy strategy maps path to commercial fusion

Super-powered
procurement opportunities.

OUR Integrated Delivery Team

UK Fusion Energy is now sourcing and selecting the best industrial partners to build a world leading Integrated Delivery Team.

As the whole plant integrator, we lead overall plant design and delivery and take the associated risk. Through working with us, partners at every level develop capabilities and products that can serve multiple fusion programmes, and markets well beyond fusion now.

We are guiding and inspiring all the capabilities required to take fusion to market. This includes combining world-class engineering with commercial expertise, major programme delivery, investment insight, design authority, business development and strategic partnering – supported by an operating model that aligns us and our partners around a shared mission.

Our Fusion Partner – UKAEA

The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority is the UK’s National Fusion Laboratory, providing unparalleled support through its mission to “deliver foundational research, technology and innovation in support of the fusion sector through world-leading fusion expertise and capability.”

Our Construction Partner – ILIOS

ILIOS – a joint venture between Kier and Nuvia, supported by AECOM, AL_A and Turner & Townsend – has been chosen as STEP Fusion’s construction partner. The consortium brings together extensive experience across major national infrastructure, nuclear and safety critical engineering, complex site transformation, programme and cost management, and world class design. Systems Partners and Strategic Suppliers

We are also now identifying key partners at the system level, those companies that specialise in specific critical technologies needed for STEP Fusion and beyond.

In the coming years, as the plant design matures, STEP Fusion will need to develop expertise in specific technology areas through System Partners and also with a broader strategic supply chain.

Our first System Partner is Tokamak Energy, a UK firm with leading capability in High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) Magnets and a pedigree in fusion.

UK Fusion Energy’s pipeline of opportunities, including those for major system partners, will fill out over the next 2 years. We’re open to working with businesses both big and small. Our aim is to be an economic and industrial opportunity for the UK on a significant scale. So delivering STEP Fusion will require a balance between specific fusion plant work, and wider collaboration.

OUR SPONSOR AND PARENT ORGANISATIONS

UK Fusion Energy Ltd is sponsored by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and is a wholly owned subsidiary of the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) Group.

The UKAEA Group is also responsible for our fusion partner the UK Atomic Energy Authority – the UK’s National Fusion Lab. While we work closely with the UKAEA as our fusion partner and build on decades of UK fusion research and development, we operate as our own organisation – with responsibility as the whole plant integrator for delivering the UK’s first prototype fusion power plant at West Burton.

The UK Government has committed £2.5 billion towards fusion energy through its Industrial Strategy to 2030, with £1.3 billion allocated directly to STEP Fusion. This long-term backing from DESNZ is helping establish the foundations needed to deliver fusion in the UK, including technology development, site preparation, supply chain growth and skills development.

Beyond 2030, UK Fusion Energy Ltd expects to attract further investment and partnership opportunities from the private sector – as we focus on delivering STEP Fusion and the wider UK fusion industry continues to grow.
