This week, UK Fusion Energy Ltd filed its 50th patent application, a huge milestone in the UK’s mission to commercialise fusion energy.
UK Fusion Energy (UKFE) is developing and protecting the intellectual property created through the STEP programme, turning innovation into industry. Since 2025, the organisation backed by the UK Government has now filed 52 patent applications, alongside 108 technology disclosures and 2 published patent applications.
These figures represent the breadth and pace of innovation being developed across the programme, from technologies needed for the STEP prototype through to innovations with applications beyond fusion energy.
UKFE’s ambition is to help build a thriving UK fusion industry that can compete in global markets, positioning organisations involved in the STEP Fusion prototype plant, set to be built in North Nottinghamshire, to support a future fleet of fusion power plants. With the global fusion industry set to be worth trillions, the opportunities for technologies developed through STEP to benefit the wider UK economy are immense.
